യുഎഇയുടെ സാംസ്‌കാരിക ആസ്ഥാനമായ ഷാര്‍ജ ഇനി ‘ലോക പുസ്തക തലസ്ഥാനം’എന്നറിയപ്പെടും. 2019 ലെ ലോക പുസത്ക തലസ്ഥാനമായി ഷാര്‍ജയെ യുനെസ്‌കോ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. വായനയെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഷാര്‍ജയുടെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തികള്‍ക്കുള്ള അംഗീകരമാണ് യുനെസ്‌കോയുടെ പ്രഖ്യാപനം. രാജ്യാന്തര ലൈബ്രറി അസ്സോസിയേഷന്‍ ആസ്ഥാനത്ത് യുനെസ്‌കോ അധികൃതര്‍ യോഗം ചേര്‍ന്ന ശേഷമായിരുന്നു പ്രഖ്യാപനം. വായനയെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനായി എല്ലാ വര്‍ഷവും പുസ്തകോത്സവം നടത്തുന്ന നഗരമാണ് ഷാര്‍ജ. ഇന്ന് ലോകത്തിലെ തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പുസ്തകോത്സവങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് ഷാര്‍ജയിലേത്. ഇത് കൂടാതെ വായനയെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനായി നിരവധി സാംസ്‌കാരിക പരിപാടികളും ഷാര്‍ജ എല്ലാ വര്‍ഷവും നടത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. ഈ പ്രവര്‍ത്തികള്‍ക്കെല്ലാമുള്ള അംഗീകാരമാണ് യുനസ്‌കോയുടെ ആഗോള പുസ്തക തലസ്ഥാനമെന്ന ബഹുമതി.
ഇതോടെ വര്‍ഷം മുഴുവന്‍ നീണ്ടുനില്‍ക്കുന്ന സാഹിത്യ സാംസ്‌കാരിക പരിപാടികള്‍ക്കു ഷാര്‍ജ വേദിയാകും. ഇതിനുള്ള പ്രത്യേക സമിതികള്‍ക്ക് ഉടന്‍ രൂപം നല്‍കും. വായനാശീലം വളര്‍ത്തിയെടുക്കാന്‍ നല്‍കിവരുന്ന സംഭാവനകള്‍, മേഖലാ രാജ്യാന്തര പ്രസാധകര്‍ക്കു നല്‍കുന്ന അവസരങ്ങള്‍, സാംസ്‌കാരിക വൈജ്ഞാനിക വളര്‍ച്ചയ്ക്ക് ആവിഷ്‌കരിക്കുന്ന പദ്ധതികള്‍ തുടങ്ങിയ ഘടകങ്ങള്‍ വിലയിരുത്തിയുള്ള അംഗീകാരം അറബ് മേഖലയ്ക്കാകെ അഭിമാനകരമാണ്.
അംഗീകാരം നേടുന്ന ആദ്യ ഗള്‍ഫ് നഗരമാണു ഷാര്‍ജ. 1998ല്‍ അറബ് സാംസ്‌കാരിക തലസ്ഥാനമായും 2014ല്‍ ഇസ്‌ലാമിക സാഹിത്യ തലസ്ഥാനമായും 2015ല്‍ അറബ് ടൂറിസം തലസ്ഥാനമായും ഷാര്‍ജ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. സാഹിത്യ സാംസ്‌കാരിക മേഖലയ്ക്കു ഷാര്‍ജ നല്‍കുന്ന സംഭാവനകള്‍ക്കുള്ള ഈ രാജ്യാന്തര അംഗീകാരം അഭിമാനാര്‍ഹമാണെന്ന് എമിറേറ്റ്‌സ് പബ്ലിഷേഴ്‌സ് അസോസിയേഷന്‍ പ്രസിഡന്റും ഷാര്‍ജ വേള്‍ഡ് ബുക്ക് ക്യാപ്പിറ്റല്‍ സംഘാടക സമിതി മേധാവിയുമായ ഷെയ്ഖ ബദൂര്‍ ബിന്‍ത് സുല്‍ത്താന്‍ അല്‍ ഖാസിമി പറഞ്ഞു.
2018ലെ ലോകപുസത്ക തലസ്ഥാനം ആതന്‍സാണ്.ഗിനി തലസ്ഥാനമായ കൊണാക്രിയാണ് 2017ല്‍ ഈ പദവി അലങ്കരിക്കുക. 2001 മുതലാണ് യുനെസ്‌കോ ലോക പുസ്തക തലസ്ഥാനമായി ഓരോ നഗരങ്ങളെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത് തുടങ്ങിയത്.

Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) was declared World Book Capital for the year 2019 by the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, after the recommendation of the Advisory Committee.
The very innovative, comprehensive and inclusive nature of the application, with a community-focused activity program containing creative proposals to engage the very large migrant population by the City made them win this title.
“I applaud the nomination of Sharjah as the World Book Capital as well as the efforts undertaken by the city in order to make reading available to as many people as possible, in particular the marginalized populations, as a motor for social inclusion, creativity and dialogue” Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, declared.
“Read – you are in Sharjah”,as the slogan says the program focuses on six different themes: inclusivity, reading, heritage, outreach, publishing and children. Along with the very planned diverse activities there will be a conference on freedom of speech, a contest for young poets, workshops for creating Braille books and tactile books as well as many events for Sharjah’s multi-ethnic population.
Running parallel to this chain of events, Sharjah will also launch Sharjah Publishing City, a space entirely dedicated to publishing and printing. It will be the first place of the kind in the region. Its objective is to reinforce the book industry by encouraging the widespread production and dissemination of publications in the Arab world.
The year of celebrations will start on 23 April, 2019, on the World Book and Copyright Day.
